Writing DOOM Fanfiction
I was pretty down on Doom: Eternal when I played through it the first two times. This third time round I still have some issues but mostly like the base game. The DLC, unfortunately, still just feels like doing chores and the final boss is weaksauce. Spoilers below while I talk about how I'd fix the story of the Ancient Gods DLC.
Okay so instead of Evil Doomguy just have Davoth be a huge demon - one of his forms during his boss fight is Evil Doomguy, but that's not his whole deal. Keep the betrayal by the Father, that's got juice. Change it so that defeating Davoth in physical form doesn't banish all the demons outside of Hell, just weakens every demon as they draw power from him. Everything else can pretty much ride1 up until the final boss fight which, I dunno, give him a couple of different mechanics, maybe make one stage a Doom-Eternal-Hellified version of E1M1.
But then, right, Doomguy defeats Davoth and weakens the demons, but as Davoth's spirit spreads throughout Hell he taunts the Doomguy, saying that Hell will always be part of creation and Doomguy will always be hunted. "Your DOOM... is ETERNAL!" Davoth's spirit says as we see Doomguy step through another portal to continue his endless work.
Do you see my vision? This even allows for actual, like, sequels instead of the current ending of Doomguy being locked in a box again. DOOM 2016 4 has Doomguy arriving at a whole new world (maybe these are just straight-up aliens) that is being encroached on by Hell. They haven't heard of him, all they know is that there's fucking demons everywhere and he seems to be doing a pretty good job of handling them. A whole blank slate for Doomguy to interact with!
Microsoft, hire me and re-hire all the id folks ASAP and I will make you a gazillion dollars.
Although if I had the power I would cut Spirits completely. The only thing they have going for them is a Ghostbusters reference that just isn't worth it.↩
